Sevierville Police Department Schedules Collision Avoidance Training for Young Drivers

Posted August 8, 2017

In an effort to improve the driving abilities and overall safety of younger drivers, the Sevierville Police Department (SPD) has scheduled a 12-hour Collision Avoidance Training (CAT) seminar on August 31 (4:45PM-9PM @ SPD) and September 2 (7:45AM-5PM @ the Sevierville Convention Center). The training is for drivers aged 16-20 years old who have a valid driver's license (participants are required to provide their own vehicle and have current insurance). The seminar is taught by SPD Officers utilizing a nationally proven program. The fee of $60.00 covers course materials and instructors. Registration is limited to ten students.

Gheobhaidh na rannpháirtithe tiomáint sa seomra ranga agus tiomáint phraiticiúil i dtimpeallacht rialaithe agus úsáid á baint acu as a bhfeithicil féin, ionas gur féidir leo cur amach a bheith acu ar an bhfeithicil is dócha a bheidh á tiomáint acu ar an mbóthar. Foghlaimimid go léir go leor ceachtanna luachmhara trí bhotúin, ach cuireann an rang deiseanna ar fáil do thiománaithe botúin a dhéanamh ar chúrsa deartha tiomána le teagascóir cáilithe ina fheithicil. Tuigfidh rannpháirtithe teorainneacha a bhfeithiclí agus a gcumas tiomána féin níos fearr.

Murab ionann agus bunchláir tiomána, gheobhaidh rannpháirtithe teagasc agus taithí phraiticiúil sna réimsí seo a leanas:

  • Evasive maneuvers
  • Threshold/ Emergency braking
  • Forward serpentine
  • Cúinneáil
  • Tacaíocht
  • Skid recovery
  • Reverse serpentine
  • Off-road recovery

Cuirfidh an oiliúint an t-eolas agus na scileanna ar fáil do thiománaithe óga le go mbeidh siad níos sábháilte agus is lú an seans go dtarlóidh imbhuailtí tromchúiseacha.

"Because of the high traffic volume in our community, we experience a significant number of traffic collisions," said SPD Chief Don Myers. "The CAT program will improve the safety of our young drivers; I urge all parents to seriously consider this training."

Nationally over 60% of all new drivers will be involved in a crash within the first twelve months of getting their driver's license. Over 40% of those crashes will result in the driver being hospitalized.

During the past 10 years thousands of teens have completed this program and less that 6% of the students have been involved in a severe crash. CAT students also receive 60% fewer traffic citations than students that have not attended the class.
